Bio
Alaina grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona and moved to Seattle in 2010 to attend Cornish College of the Arts. Her arts education focused on painting, drawing, sculpture, and art history, with an emphasis on cross-medium exploration. After graduation, she took an interior design job and disentangled from the conservative Christian church. She was intrigued by Memento Mori, meaning "remember that you will die", in which she found a darkly fitting version of the relationship she’d been taught to build with god. This suited her as a framework for artistic investigation that she still utilizes today.
Alaina is an active member and leader in the Seattle visual arts community. She co-founded and directed the Living Artists Collective (2019-2023) for which she curated six gallery shows, she runs the monthly Seattle Arts Leaders meeting for artists and art businesses to network and share knowledge, and she regularly volunteers her time with Seattle's Belltown Art Walk and Slip Gallery.
When Alaina is not in the studio, she can be found taking dance classes, bouldering, reading, writing, and spending time with loved ones. She continues to organize local gallery shows and events with Seattle’s art community.
Artist Statement
My art practice is inspired by memento mori, Latin for “remember that you will die”. To me, the natural progression from a reminder of mortality is the depiction of experiences that make up a life. I am fascinated by objects and practices useful to humans as ritual-building, routine-seeking creatures. Drawing from my own stories, I explore the feeling of comfort and freedom when creating a bittersweet homage to the inevitability of passing time. I work in progression: a collected object may remind me of a story that inspires a poem, then a painting and another poem, mirroring the movement of a person through phases in their life. Skulls, wilting flowers, household objects, and basic foodstuffs are depicted through my primary medium of oil paint, often paired with fabrics, embroidery, and other processes dubbed “women’s work”, offering a window into my personal experience of being human.
